THE STARLINGS
By Brett Howlett

GENRE: Science Fiction, Drama
LOGLINE:

When the captain of a winning dance team discovers they may be lab rats for a performance-enhancing implant, she must fight to uncover the truth while resisting rival teams, jealous coaches, and those who want what’s inside their heads. So You Think You Can Dance meets Black Swan meets Hanna.

SYNOPSIS:

The Starlings ain’t your average team of prim 17 year old competitive dancers. They’re multicultural, life-toughened, and whip their rivals’ asses by performing with superhuman synchronicity. They attract awe from their judges and hate from competitors. They believe nothing will stop them from winning the World Dance Championships.

Until a team member is assaulted in her home. And without thinking, ‘DJ’ their team captain, leads a synchronized attack, throwing a kitchen knife to one team member, who deflects it at full speed to another, and so on, until it‘s planted into the skull of their assailant. Killing him instantly.

The Starlings are shocked into questioning the true source of their abilities. DJ, an unapologetic type-A, driven by hard work and prayer, fights to keep her team focused on winning competitions, avoids the local sheriff’s questions, and sets out to discover WTF could have happened to them.

But when DJ learns the shocking truth, that the Starlings are lab rats for a performance-enhancing implant, she must reevaluate everything she believes. She must find those responsible, while hiding her team’s

increasingly odd behavior: from reading each others’ minds, and feeling each other’s pain, to turning a rival coach’s sabotage into an ad-lib competition winning dance routine.

The STARLINGS series is set between the glitz and glamor of dance competition culture, and the dying American industrial town they’re desperate to escape from. The stakes aren’t just win or lose, but in how

teen girls forge identity and meaning against a backdrop of competitors, coaches, and staff who’ll do anything to reach the top.

The Starlings team motto is ‘Win or Die’, they now need to decide if they mean it.
