When a lightning strike in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains destroys the use of her right hand — shattering her promising future as a concert pianist — a young San Francisco woman fights her way back to those same peaks as one of the Forest Service's first female fire lookouts, only to discover that the place that broke her once will take everything it wants, and that she would choose it anyway.
