FORGIVING RETRIBUTION
By Curt Samlaska

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

A remorseful doctor refuses treatment for a potentially terminal illness, believing it is retribution for the death of a teenager under his care. Haunted by the ghost of the teenager, he struggles to find a reason to live (10 pages).

SYNOPSIS:

Opening scene (Act 1): Heavy breathing. It's dark and there is a burning car in the background. POV injured passenger hears muffled voice: "I got you." The injured man's vision clears, focusing on a 40-year-old man..."I got you. I'm Dr. Brona. I've got you. You're gonna be okay." Arthur (45-year-old black male) wakes from his nightmare, startling his wife. "Same dream?" She asks. "It's not a dream. It happened," he responds.

(Act 2) Dr. Brona is now 65-years-old and is in a dermatology clinic. He is informed that he has an aggressive melanoma. He is haunted by the ghost of a teenager that died of pericarditis and myocarditis. He blames himself for missing the diagnosis. The teenager appears frequently, staring at him with a blank, accusing gaze. He denies further evaluation and treatment, believing that his misfortunes are retribution.

(Act 3) Arthur has been looking for Dr. Brona for many years, having only his last name to go on. It was a difficult charge. He shows up at Dr. Brona's house and realizes that he has finally found the man who saved his life. Unknowingly, it is now up to Arthur to save Dr. Brona.

I have produced and directed Forgiving Retribution, completing the last shoot the first week in April. I have submitted it to a number of film festivals, and have actually just been selected a finalist in the Nest Step Film Festival in Cannes, honorable mention in the American Golden Picture International Film Festival, and also selected for the Military & Veteran Media Awards...and it has only been like 3 weeks after I submitted. Unfortunately, I can't get away to go even though they are providing for hotel and food...just not enough time, the show is on the 14th to 17th of this month. The trailer is out on YouTube if anyone wants to check it out. Also, has anybody been to one of these festivals? If so, what have your experiences been like? Would be great to talk to distributors and other creators.
