MARIA: ONE ACT PLAY

LOGLINE:

Two Artist, a guitarist and ballerina, that never meet, inspire on another to be true to themselves while navigating the Paris stage life.

SYNOPSIS:

ACT I : Sergio

Scene I

  • Sergio is a single and lovable musician who street performs his music.
  • He meet his lover, Dina, at a dinner party that is boasted by his father, the banker.
  • The two fall in love and Dina admires how Sergio is passionate about playing his guitar and singing.
  • The only thing is that Sergio’s father, John de Louis, wants Sergio to take the life of a banker.
  • Sergio continues to play in he streets, but is upstaged by a tight rope walker.
  • Sergio then takes his time heading home by walking down an alleyway.
  • He hears classical music playing in the background and looks up into a studio apartment.
  • He sees a lone ballerina dancing to music.
  • She stumbles and falls, but gets back up again to continue her dance.
  • This inspired Sergio to not give up with his dream of being a musician.
  • The next day, Sergio plays his guitar in the streets and win the crowd over the tight rope walker.
  • Everyday he visits his muse and each day Sergio is encouraged to keep on playing.
  • But one day, unfortunate news comes to Sergio in the form of a letter to Dina.
  • Dina has been offered a job as a manager at a famous store in the next city over.
  • Dina and Sergio are tested as she asks him if Sergio wants to come with her and start and new life.
  • Sergio walks off to think and ends up down the alleyway to where his muse was dancing.
  • Today, however, his muse is crying her eyes out.
  • Sergio begins to realize this is a sign that he needs to stop looking for answers and come up with his own discussions.
  • He comes to a conclusion as he picks up his guitar and starts to sing his thank you song to his Maria.

Scene II

Scene III

Act II: Serena

Scene I

  • Serena is a prodigy ballet dancer.
  • She one a scholarship at the Paris Opera when she was eight years old.
  • Barely sees her parents, who own a tavern in another village.
  • Has finished tryouts for playing Giselle and has succeeded in getting the main part.
  • Serena is congratulated and happy she got the part but feels a little to pressured by everyone that she leaves for her studio apartment.
  • Serena practices and freely dances to the guitar music outside her window.

Scene II

  • Serena goes to a fundraiser party for the school.
  • She is admired for her talents and loved by all.
  • Her sponsor, Arthur Servavo, wants to take her on the road to dancer in front of the world.
  • Arthur even tries to get Serena to dance with Raphael, another famous male dancer.
  • Serena feels overwhelmed as she runs out, through the kitchen, and out the back door to the alleyway.
  • She stops to take a breather and looks up at the sky.
  • As Serena feels calmer she then hears a noise rom behind her.
  • The ballerina looks to see that its one of the busboy coming out for a smoke.
  • They look at each other as they strike up a conversation.
  • Throughout the night the two become fond of each other as they fall in love.

Scene III

  • Serena dances better than ever as every day the ballerina falls more and more in love with the busboy, Gabriel.
  • But all comes crashing down when Arthur tells her to give up with foolishness and marry Raphael.
  • Later, Gabriel tells Serena that he has been offered a position as chef at a famous restaurant in the next city.
  • He offers her to come with him and start a new life there.
  • Serena heads home as she tries to think of what to do and ends up crying.

Scene IV (for both Serena and Sergio)

  • Sergio plays his guitar and sings to Serena,
  • “Maria my angel, my goddess, my muse
  • (Throughout the song Maria dances to the music, feeling free-er than she has in years to dance)
  • After the song the duo come to a realization as they head off to the train station.
  • They both head to the train station but get on two different trains in separate directions (missing each other the whole time).
  • On the train ride, Dina says that she has bought a apartment for them that has an for sale shop underneath it.
  • Sergio decides to do street performance part-time and instead become a teacher to future musicians
  • He sees a pictures in the paper of the ballet dancer.
  • Dina says “isn’t it sad for the prodigy ran away with a strange man.”
  • Sergio says, “No, she just flew off to be free.”
  • (Throughout the song Maria dances to the music, feeling free-er than she has in years to dance)
  • After the song the duo come to a realization as they head off to the train station.
