A handful of people, various backgrounds and colour of skin, living in a shared house, bringing together their beliefs, habits and values. It is the cultural clash between british society and the east european migrants, the struggle to integrate and work in a society struck by post-brexit issues and post-pandemic crisis, regarded through a comical perspective.
SYNOPSIS:
Act I
The six tenants of various backgrounds live together in a shared house where they bring their own habits and practice, contributing to the cultural mix. To simplify the chores and the relation with the landlord, they all agreed on delegating the Balkan bloke, George, to be the one in charge: he calls the landlord for issues like heating, plumbing, and repairs, and he also collects the money from the others and sends the monthly payment to the owner.
But one month, the money fails to get into the landlord’s account and nobody knows why.
Act II
We find out that George was pressured to send all the money he collected to his parents, as his father is severely ill and hospitalised. He opted for the “eastern” practice, sending all the money he collected back home and hoping that the others won’t notice a thing until his salary will arrive so that he can put the money back. But life always pays back the deeds sooner than expected, George’s salary doesn’t arrive in time, so the landlord calls for his money.
The other tenants realise there was a shameful attempt to use their money in personal purposes, therefore they scold George and threaten him with being kicked out of the house. But when the wrath dies out, they learn that this is a very delicate position, being torn between doing the right thing (paying the rent) and helping out the family, who was in a very dramatic situation. So, everyone tries to contribute to the rent payment with extra amounts. They come up with a funny but, again, unorthodox plan to get some extra dosh: they collect items displayed on the street for collection, polish them, give them a commercial face and sell it on the market for small but significant (for them) prices.
Act III
The fiery, flamboyant lesbian couple next door intervene in the course of events and, although the conservative member of the couple (Joan) despises them and wants them out of the community - “These tenants (next door) are like Covid 19: you cannot get rid of them, so we have to learn to live with their presence!” – the other member (Liz) shows more resilience and openness to new stories of life, therefore they both decide to treat the neighbours with acceptance and understanding.
Some extra quid is finally on the table, just in time for Steve the landlord to collect his rent and admire the strong cohesion between the six tenants, proving that friendship outweighs the backgrounds and the colour of skin.
