By Kevin Enners

GENRE: Comedy, Drama
LOGLINE:

After a tragic car accident ends his athletic career and leaves him paralyzed, a cynical former track star struggles to write an authentic novel about disability, only to find himself haunted by the manifestations of his own fictional characters who force him to confront his deepest insecurities.

SYNOPSIS:

Alex Murray is a star college athlete at the top of his game, having just won a major track meet, where he meets Sara, a charming student journalist. However, the celebration is short-lived. A late-night car accident caused by his friends' reckless behavior leaves Alex paralyzed from the waist down and kills his two best friends, Sean and Kyle.

One year later, Alex lives in Marietta, Georgia, grappling with his new reality and a looming publishing deadline. He has signed a deal for a novel titled The Real Deal, but he is paralyzed by writer's block and the fear of creating "weaponized empathy"— a story that treats disability as "inspirational sap" for a non-disabled audience. His editor, Laura, pressures him to deliver something raw and honest, but Alex fears being seen as nothing more than an "invalid in a wheelchair."

As Alex spirals into existential dread, his own creative process takes a surreal turn. His fictional protagonist, Trey, and another character, Maya, manifest in his room as "hallucinations" born of stress and frustration. These characters act as his unfiltered conscience, mocking his clichés and pushing him to write something "real" rather than the "drivel" he thinks the world wants.

The narrative follows Alex's rocky journey through physical rehabilitation — including a tentative attempt at handcycling — and his evolving relationship with Sara, who reappears in his life. He eventually publishes the book, but under pressure, he creates a narrative that plays into the very stereotypes he loathes. This leads to a public backlash where he is labeled an "ableist" and a fraud for manipulating disability narratives.

In a climactic public moment, Alex chooses to reject the fame built on a lie. He acknowledges the "monstrous, humiliating portrait" he created and declares that he is no longer the man who lived in fear of his own reflection. The story concludes with Alex finding a genuine path forward, supported by his family and Sara, finally learning that "hope" is the ability to find a new path when the old one is gone.
