An aspiring director, tormented by guilt over his sister's death and love for a dying woman, fights to make his film and win an Oscar as reality and his psychosis dangerously merge.
SYNOPSIS:
Marco Deliprandi, a fifty-five-year-old aspiring filmmaker, lives with the ghost of Daniela Delicori—his late girlfriend who died of illness years ago. She appears to him constantly, speaking, advising, and anchoring him to a grief he cannot release.
After years of struggle, Marco's screenplay catches the attention of Nanni Moretti, who agrees to produce the film. As production progresses, Marco's mental health deteriorates. He suffers psychotic breaks, battles bipolar disorder, and relies heavily on lithium medication. His relationship with Andrea Ruiz, a new love, falters because Marco cannot let go of Daniela.
The film premieres at the Venice Film Festival to boos and hostility. Marco responds with his middle finger to the audience. Yet the film gains momentum, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.
At the Oscars ceremony, as the Best Picture winner is announced, Marco swallows an entire bottle of lithium tablets. His film wins. He collapses in his seat, dying in Daniela's arms—or in the arms of her memory—finally achieving the togetherness he had promised her.
Story of an Illness is a meditation on grief, artistic obsession, and the thin line between memory and madness—where the greatest triumph and the final tragedy occupy the same breath.
