CLOCKWORK JUSTICE
By Massimiliano Aita

GENRE: Drama
LOGLINE:

A guilt-ridden judge and a grieving lawyer join
forces to destroy her narcissistic, chess-obsessed ex-husband – only to
discover that in their game of revenge, the last move belongs to him.

SYNOPSIS:

Rome, 1988. Antonio Colmani watches helplessly as his younger sister Giorgia drowns while they are swimming. The trauma will haunt him forever. That same year, the teenage Aldo Copelli charms his class with a provocative lecture on game theory, already displaying his love for strategy and provocation.

Ten years later, Antonio marries Lisa Maldonati, a brilliant attorney. At their wedding reception, Aldo – now a lawyer himself – cuts in and dances with Lisa, whispering: "I want her." A love triangle is born that will last for decades.

Lisa and Antonio discover they cannot have children due to Antonio's infertility. Antonio, crushed by guilt over his sister's death, refuses to consider artificial insemination and gradually unravels both professionally and emotionally. Lisa leaves him and marries Aldo.

Using an anonymous donor, Lisa gives birth to Ferruccio, a beloved son. But Aldo learns he carries a hereditary genetic heart condition (dilated cardiomyopathy) – the same disease that killed his grandmother. Refusing to take a DNA test, he leaves their child's fate to chance. Ferruccio grows up playing chess with Aldo and learns to call him "Dad." Until one day, drunk and enraged, Aldo screams at the boy: "I am not your father." Shortly after, Ferruccio is hit by a car and dies.

Lisa and Aldo destroy each other in the aftermath – alcohol, violence, blame. They separate. Lisa reconnects with Antonio, who has become a judge. Together, they devise a long game of revenge: using old photos of Lisa's bruised face (taken during Aldo's alcoholic rages), they orchestrate a media scandal that gets Aldo disbarred and leads to his arrest on unrelated charges.

Aldo, now alone, reconnects briefly with his new partner Ledi Alessandri, who is pregnant with his child. But he cannot bear the thought of another son. When Ledi leaves him, Aldo understands that he has lost everything – the game is over.

In a final, desperate act, he enters the courthouse with a fake bomb vest, triggers an evacuation, and humiliates Antonio with a false alarm. He then checks into a hotel, writes a short note ("I am ready. At peace. No regrets."), places a photo of Ferruccio next to it, knocks over the chess king on the nightstand – and takes his own life with the same pistol he used to threaten Antonio.

The film ends with Antonio, broken, handing the photo of his sister Giorgia to a policeman, muttering "I had to protect her." Lisa closes her eyes as her two former husbands – one shattered, one dead – disappear from her life.
