A down-on-his-luck literary agent travels to the Alps to retrieve a screenplay from his client, only to discover that the mysterious "writing retreat" is far from what it seems.

SYNOPSIS:

Ethan, a failed literary agent haunted by his late father’s expectations, travels to rural Switzerland in search of his most eccentric client, the enigmatic horror writer Wesley Raven. Wesley has written a screenplay for his popular book series which Ethan is desperate to get his hands on in time to get the big movie made that could save his career. But Wesley has seemingly vanished from the face of the Earth. His last known location? The Wagner Institute, a remote Swiss retreat famous for curing writer’s block–even the worst kind.

Ethan arrives at the Wagner Institute, a villa disturbingly frozen in time. Although it seems operational there is no one to be found inside. After searching for Wesley and the screenplay everywhere, he decides to spend the night, but soon things begin to take a strange turn until even reality begins to unravel. Ethan finds himself trapped in the institute by a malevolent, interdimensional entity tied to a red typewriter that consumes writers’ stories, trapping their essence as mere props in an endless, looping nightmare.

Soon Ethan encounters the spirit of Albert Wagner, the Institute’s founder and a failed writer who is obsessed with reincarnating as a literary genius. Through the red typewriter Wagner harnesses the power of the interdimensional entity, rewriting reality itself to trap Ethan in a surreal horror story. Every attempt to escape is met with warped logic, strange characters, and a growing red fog that encroaches upon the Institute.

However, Wesley has left clues for Ethan on how to escape: screenplay pages which tell the story that Ethan himself is now trapped in as the events around him unfold in real time. Thus knowing how to advance the “plot” Ethan eventually finds Wesley who reveals they both have become characters in the screenplay he was writing. But how on Earth should they now escape this eternal loop? As it turns out Wesley’s story itself–half-finished and chaotic–is the key. Wesley attempts a final rewrite. He completes his screenplay by changing its narrative structure that Wagner worships so much. Wesley’s twist? Turning the horror story into a buddy action-comedy and thus subverting Wagner’s control.

In a climactic showdown Ethan and Wesley suit up for a high-octane paintball battle against Wagner’s army of writers trapped in this interdimensional void. After a frenzied, bullet-riddled final stand they defeat Wagner. The Institute collapses, freeing the trapped souls. Ethan and Wesley escape through an interdimensional red door, emerging into a peaceful meadow–having rescued Wesley’s completed screenplay: "The Final Rewrite."

However, the red typewriter tied to the entity has been carried over to the real world as well. Ethan, now determined to take control of his life, lets go of his father’s haunting legacy while Wesley decides to keep the typewriter safely with him by feeding it stories to keep its power contained. "The Final Rewrite" is a darkly comedic, surreal horror-action film that blends metafiction with themes of creative struggle, personal growth, and the enduring power of storytelling.
