A Bronx couture genius teams up with a counterfeiter to sell fakes -- but their success depends on the one person who refuses to help.
SYNOPSIS:
Fashion Savant Minka heads to her job at a high-end boutique by subway, where she sees Khalil, half-hustler, half-sweetheart, try to fence a fake designer bag. He’s about to close the sale when Minka signals that the item is fake and warns the hapless rider off. Khalil confronts Minka, who inadvertently reveals her encyclopedic knowledge of fashion and luxury brands. Khalil proposes they team up and gives her his number on a faux tag, but Minka, whose grandmother is a couture genius living in poverty because her designs were all stolen, refuses. At work, she’s demeaned by the ridiculous and bossy owner, who is completely out of touch with both the street style she wants to sell and the real lives of people who are not wealthy. She forces Minka to work late and responds to her protests by suggesting that she take Uber home – prohibitively expensive from Madison Avenue to Minka’s apartment in the Bronx. When Minka finally does leave late at night, she’s robbed on the subway platform and finds the only number in her pocket – Khalil’s. He picks her up and she, furious at her life being controlled by her boss, agrees to join his schemes. They plot to create fake designer dresses and sell them at the store where Minka works, but the first one nearly gets her caught because she’s not as good as her grandmother at pattern-making. Minka is about to give up when her boss forces her to work late yet again and she sees that she has a way out. She and Khalil convince her grandmother to join their enterprise, and soon they are selling flawless fakes through to the shop’s wealthy and oblivious customers.
