By Celine Leon

GENRE: Drama, Comedy
LOGLINE:

When an exasperated college student finds himself involuntarily trapped with his dysfunctional family under one roof over spring break, he must find a way to reconcile their differences while an ominous outside force threatens to rip apart their lives and community.

SYNOPSIS:

In a packed airport, a traveler attempts to make off with a suspicious suitcase but is intercepted by TSA. Upon inspection, the suitcase is found to contain several broken vials contaminated by some unknown culture. Elsewhere, college senior Jacob Herskowitz has grudgingly returned home for spring break, albeit a few days late. While attending service at the synagogue where his father, Herman, is the rabbi, Jacob gets into a loud, heated argument with his younger, overachieving, sister Rachel embarrassing Herman. While Herman scolds Jacob and Rachel for their immature behavior, Jacob's best friend, Andrew Pedraza, also a college senior, surprises them for spring break. Herman notices a woman, Natalia Fiorio, handing out red fliers to the leaving congregants and confronts her. This is not the first confrontation between the two and Natalia only leaves when Herman threatens to call the police on her for trespassing on private property.

Later at dinner, Herman grills Jacob for his indecisiveness regarding whether or not to attend graduate school, unfavorably comparing him to Rachel. Rachel is evasive about questions regarding her grades and Andrew reveals he's accepted a job offer for after graduation but will not say where the job is. Jacob tells Andrew of his desire to take a gap year.

While leaving to run errands the next morning, the family is accosted by the Herskowitz's' annoying next door neighbor Lydia Rickenbacker who invites them all to a dinner party at her house that evening. Later, Herman meets with Reverend Nelson and Father Thomas who both express concerns about seeing the same red fliers within their own congregations but Herman does not take their concerns seriously. Herman also meets with Mrs. Williams who is worried about a new tattoo acquired by her daughter Kelly, who seems to have anarchist sympathies. Meanwhile, Jacob, Andrew, and Rachel encounter a hostile man at the shooting range and a cashier espousing conspiracy theories while grocery shopping.

At Lydia's dinner party, the other guests are Natalia and the hostile man from the shooting range who is revealed to be her husband, Jay. Over dinner, Natalia espouses a conspiracy theory about the great "American Falsehood" and expresses her hostility toward organized religion to everyone's amusement. Rachel gets extremely drunk. Afterwards, Jacob tells Herman his desire to take a gap year to which Herman reacts badly. Upset, Jacob starts to leave when the family hears over the news that all flights have been canceled until authorities can determine the extent of contamination from the broken vials.

The next morning, protests have broken out downtown over the flight cancellations. Herman calls Rachel's college and finds out that she revoked his access to her records. Herman confronts Rachel over dinner and the latter reveals that she was suspended last semester for defacing an apartment building. A massive argument ensues during which Herman blames Jacob for not being a better role model for Rachel to which Jacob loudly retorts "That's not my job!" Andrew reveals that his new job is in Florida, upsetting Rachel. Jacob drives away in anger but is stopped by cop who tells him a curfew is in effect due to the escalating protests. Jacob returns home and encounters Rachel, who felt abandoned by Jacob when he left for college far away crying "You left me!" In the morning, Jacob finds Herman passed out drunk the driveway and Andrew and Rachel fight over Andrew keeping the location of his new job a secret.

Eventually, Jacob brings the family together for a family meeting to try to reconcile their differences. Rachel confesses her love for Andrew. Herman receives a threatening call and the family prepare to defend themselves. The following morning, the family wakes up to find a massive mob including Kelly and the cashier led by Natalia and Jay assembled in their front driveway on the premise that Herman is part of a conspiracy behind the flight cancellations. The family shelters in the attic but the mob breaks into the house. The family escapes by descending down a trellis into the backyard but Andrew is shot protecting Herman. The family is rescued by Lydia who crashes into Natalia with her car, killing her. Andrew recovers in the hospital.

Later, the family returns to find their house destroyed. Kelly Williams and other mob members are arrested. Herman laments not having taken Natalia’s initial threats seriously. Herman gives Jacob his blessing for the gap year and apologizes for burdening him with so much responsibility after their mother's death. Herman and Rachel make amends as well. Finally, having learned to stop trying to run away from his familial obligations, Jacob promises to move closer to home.
