Synopsis × Title: Iron Men By: John Metzner The story follows Joseph Gierman, a 17-year-old living in Brooklyn in 1929. His father Thomas dies but a friend of the family, David Skye, a Mohawk ironworker, survives the accident while constructing a building. At the funeral, David consoles the grieving Joseph. Over the next few years, Joseph struggles with the loss of his father. He disappears from his family and friends, living on the streets. Eventually David finds Joseph and takes him in, treating him like a son. Joseph rekindles his childhood friendship with David's daughter Amy. He also joins David, Frank Jacobs, a childhood friend, and David's cousin Teddy Freeman as an ironworker. When the Depression causes a lull in New York construction, David gets a lead on bridge work in San Francisco. The four men hop freight trains across the country to work on the Golden Gate Bridge. The work is difficult and dangerous, with new safety regulations that the riveters find absurd. Joseph and Amy exchange letters, and he learns she is pregnant. Though torn about leaving her, Joseph wants to provide for his future family. Tensions grow between Joseph and Frank over Amy's affections. After a near-fatal confrontation on the bridge, the two men reconcile, acknowledging their brotherly bond. But shortly after, a tragic scaffolding collapse kills David, Frank, Teddy, and seven other workers. Severely injured, Joseph recuperates in the hospital. Amy travels from New York to be by his side. Once recovered, Joseph marries Amy. Using money David had invested for him, Joseph buys a house and starts a family. Two months after their son David is born, they hold a memorial for the men killed on the bridge. Though heartbroken by the loss, Joseph finds peace, knowing his friends helped forge an iconic landmark and shape his life's journey. The story concludes on the bridges 1937 opening day, honoring the workers who built it. Joseph vows to never forget his fallen friends and the sacrifices they made to build America.
