A forcefully cured vampire steps back into a magical world when he discovers a victim seemingly killed by a supernatural creature.
SYNOPSIS:
Phantom Tears follows supernatural being Jason Wright through two different eras: his years as a vampire leading to him being forcefully cured and the years after where an investigation into a disturbing murder brings him closer to the magical past he lost. Hannibal meets The Vampire Diaries, Phantom Tears takes viewers on a coming of age journey that is 200 year too late.
In the Present, Jason struggles to maintain a human life. With a degrading body from years of supernatural fights, the local gangster breathing down his neck, and his job as a detective on the line, hope comes in the form of a new cold-blooded murder case. Looking into an apparent victim of a supernatural creature, Jason believes fantasy hasn’t left reality.
Partnered with him is Detective Lauren McCabe, a fantasist with dark desires. Where Jason used to be steeped in magic, she’s had none and her loneliness brings about an interest in the macabre and sadistic. As the two work through their new murder case, Jason’s old, vampiric blood lust sparks and Lauren gets a taste of how satisfying darkness can be.
Unbeknownst to the detectives the killer is close by and their continued efforts lead to a twisted, otherworldly fairy tale to come to life.
In the Past, Jason returns to his hometown after being cursed by a witch. Reconnecting with centuries old friend David, Jason’s presence creates an unpredictable nightmare as both he and David inspire pained student Jillian to step into a supernatural world.
Jill’s search for a different life is made all the more complicated by the two vampires. While the altruistic David makes her high school existence seem like a fantasy, charming, wise, and self-serving psychopath Jason offers a threatening, seductive danger. When starving, imprisoned vampire Kai arrives in town out for violent revenge, his desire for destruction brings Jill to face up to her fairy tale perception of this new reality, while David struggles to keep his vampiric nature in check and Jason learns what it means to do more than satisfy one’s own needs.
While as a vampire Jason learns to reconnect with his humanity, with those powers ripped away from him in the present and his past connections gone, he must learn why he should maintain the person he grew to be and whether or not there’s a new life for him in a reality missing magic.
