After dirty bombs and a meltdown, the Matters family is separated. Lou has suffered traumatic brain injury and cannot recall his name and their sons, Jason and Marty, have taken to the road to escape radioactive fallout and, because the grid is down, cannot call home to determine how things are. Lou begins his slow rehabilitation, remembers his name, and he and Mary are reunited. Lou continues to rehabilitate and Mary and their neighbors and eventually Lou join in a search for Jason and Marty. The boys have roughed it in an abandoned cabin, stayed in a community shelter, and, to avoid further involvement with some boys who are petty thieves, fled further north to Lochlee. There, Lem takes them to the Red Cross which contacts their aunt in Ohio. Finally, they go to stay with their aunt until such time as their parents can come for them.
