Hey Dave. If you're ever up this way.. let me know.
Dave, I am a production sound mixer in Florida. Tell me make and model of your wireless mics and radio equipment and I can help you eliminate the distortion and wind noise I hear on your soundtracks.
Thank you John ~ Sony UTX lavs and a cabled Rode shotgun mic with cat. I got some larger windscreen and even a couple of tiny cats for the lavs, plus a Rode shock mount. One of our lavs got dunked, so we had a lot of problems, trying to catch interviewee off interviewer's ,mic, even resorting to on-cam. Lav now replaced. But this year we are resolve to make better audio. All help welcome! Love and peace, Dave
Dave, It sounds like your biggest issue is setting the volume structure (adjusting ALL the volume controls from transmitter to camera). The critical control is the transmitter. If it is set too high NOTHING can compensate. Distortion at the transmitter usually means that you did not leave enough headroom (from voice level to clipping level). I would suggest lowering the transmitter level by at least 6dB. You can use any meter in the chain to estimate. You need to allow for when the talent speaks excitedly. Laughter and raised voices are clipping. Normal speaking voice should be around -12 to -20dB with excited voices topping out at -12dB. Also you need to do some post audio work to adjust final levels and add compression.
I totally agree on the post audio compensation.
Thank you Jphn and Rick ~ This is something I hadn't considered. Will try on today's shoot!
Checked levels and found them boosted 12Db to increase sensitivity coping with above-mentioned problems ~ New lav gives good levels, and shock mount on Rode works fine. It's nice to know expert help is on the network. Thanks a lot!
Dave, Post a link to the video once it has been placed online so we can check it out! I f you can ever get budget for some better audio gear I have some recommendations. Also, I have gotten tired of the lack of good audio for film training videos so I am working on creating my own this year.
