Screenplay Competitions 2019

Before I start trawling the web - does anyone have a manageable shortlist of credible 2019 'screenplay contests for 'mainstream' screenplays? I would like to review/research 10 - 15 contests to short list 2-4 for actual entry in 2019. I am assuming there are people who do this every year and have a template of contests rather than compiling a fresh list every year. Also - do you think it's a better strategy to avoid the 'big' contests and enter smaller but respected ones? Thanks.

Anthony Moore

It all depends on what your goals for the contest. If you are looking for feedback, there are several contest that provide it with every entry. If you are looking for your best chance of winning, enter the smaller contests that have a small prize or winner certificate only. If you have written several screenplays and are confident in your writing, the go for the biggies, Page Awards, Nicholls or Big Break. But no matter which ones you enter, treat them as if a real producer will be reading them because that may be the case. Always put your best foot forward.

Choose coverage until script is contest ready. Feedback from pros with a higher understanding is how we grow. At this point you wanna know the quality of your story craft. Find and fix weak links in the writing so you enter contests with bulletproof pages.

I would only enter contests that have a proven track record of access to industry gatekeepers/decision makers/producers/reps. Many writers entered the professional ranks as a result of reputable contests.

You may also want to pitch directly to industry pro's who are a good match for your work, too.

Choose wisely, and best fortunes to you, John!

Pamela: Yes. Disney in the morning with my white binkie...Fellini at night with my red binkie...with three naps in between. What more could a baby want?
