"Don't pay for script notes," Lucy V Hay advises. "Post a peer review shoutout." Well, that's what I've decided to do, so if you happen to be game, plz shout!
Please define “peer review”. To my way of thinking, peer-review is an analysis of something proposed, evaluated by a group of experts in the appropriate field. I've never met anyone I would identify as an “expert” screenwriter (an I know some pretty dam_ good ones) - so who do you have in mind? Those that I know are busy earning a living at the craft and have little time to offer “freebie” reviews of unskilled/beginning/entry level screenwriters – it's the sad truth, but most working writers need to pay the rent & and put shoes on the baby. My advise to new screenwriters is to write, rewrite and polish your script until you think it shines. Then work overtime, save your dollars and pay for a professional script analysis. Be very careful here because there are only a few really good “script doctors” out there (I can think of two/three right now). If you want a screenwriting career – it's gonna cost you a few bucks up front – do you believe enough in yourself to make it happen?
Peer reviews are only as good as your peers. If they happen to be industry professionals, you are golden. Otherwise, find a reputable review service or a trusted experienced writer and pay them.
Danny, that's very true. Sounds like she's contradicting herself. And, of course, she is! But her point is valid,,, She points out to the fact that peer reviews tend to be multiple, varied, coming from a lot of angles, and altogether more generous, richer ,,,,
I love your comments, Laura! :) I'm currently with the Hollywood Screenreaders getting a training at writing a balanced, well-meaning coverage,,,, and all the points you've just made ring a big bell.
