The basic idea for this piece is a universal issue I had not dealt with until moving to the East Coast and renting out someones basement room. Flooding. Having packed most of my belongings in cardboard boxes, when my room flooded from massive amounts of rain one night, I woke up to a swimming pool of priceless artifacts from my childhood that had been wrecked. Wadding in the freezing mess I realized that this catastrophe struck my landlord far worse, when he pulled out what remained of his wife's belongings from a basement closet, only to find the same destruction as I. Cancer had taken her life and now the flood waters had washed away what memories remain.
