In this episode, two guards find themselves faced with a difficult decision: how to carry out the punishment of Deuteronomy 25:1-3, which states that a person may be given up to forty stripes. The guards decide to limit themselves to no more than 39 stripes and the punishment is labeled "forty stripes save one" (2 Corinthians 11:24).
