CAFFEINE & GASOLINE Steven Maes, graphic artist on several New Mexico based projects including Longmire, In Plain Sight, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, announced the launch of a crowdsourcing campaign to help fund the production of his new documentary, “Caffeine and Gasoline, The Evolution of the American Rocker.” You can find the link to the campaign below. This unique film will tell the story of the Cafe Racer Culture as it arose in the United Kingdom and spread throughout the world, including New Mexico. Steven is producing, writing and directing the project and will be joined by other members of New Mexico’s film community, including Rosario Provenza, Tom Donnelly, Kenneth Segura Knoll, Rich Romero, Joe Martinez, Damian Montoya, Meghan Noce, Kayleigh Maes and the members of the Duke City Rockers Motorcycle Club. My partner, Toby Younis and I, have been invited to provide second unit camera and sound on the project. HASTA LA VISTA, TOM! Last Sunday, we said au revoir to our very good friend, and the biggest fan of the New Mexico Film Industry, Tom Donnelly, Director of the Film Program at Leeds Trinity University in the UK. Tom completed much of his research for his book, “Beyond Hollywood - Breaking Good: Film and Television Production in New Mexico,” which will be published by the University of New Mexico Press in 2017. Tom promised to return as early as December, and with two other New Mexico based book projects in the works, will be spending even more time with us. We will miss him and look forward to his speedy return. NMWIF MENTORS & SHORTS SHOWCASE New Mexico Women in Film Mentor Mania took place last weekend. Local filmmakers had the opportunity to network with top industry professionals and receive great advice. Mentoring those who are just starting out in the film industry is what New Mexico Women in Film does best and along with that comes the 2016 Women in Film & Television International Short Film Showcase. This is the 11th Anniversary of the Showcase and some of these short films have been nominated for Academy Awards, received distribution deals and garnered recognition internationally. New Mexico Women in Film Members may submit films less than 2 years old, up to 15 minutes, directed by a woman, and featuring at least 2 other women in key roles, no later than October 15, 2015. Screenings take place on March 8, 2016. Visit their website for more information. PRO BONO FILM LAW CLINIC On the subject of helping new filmmakers, the New Mexico Lawyers for the Arts, in association with the Albuquerque Film Office, will hold their Third Annual Pro Bono Film Law Clinic in Albuquerque. This free legal advice opportunity for independent filmmakers will be held at the Hotel Andaluz lobby on Saturday Sept. 12, from 10am to 1pm. Toby Younis and I attended this clinic last year and we were able to speak with a lawyer about our specific concerns. Space is limited, so reserve your 30-minute consultation now by emailing the Albuquerque Film Office and don't miss out on professional legal advice on entertainment law, business law, tax law, and related matters for film and TV producers.
