Film (Documentary) Cinematographer Liberia, a nation scarred by 14 years of brutal civil war, stands at a critical moment in its history as it heads for its second democratic election in October 2011. This election will decide the country's future course - towards peace and stability or violence and chaos. Assisting the UN peacekeeping operation is a special unit from India - an all-female police contingent. Deployed yearly since 2007, it is the first such unit to ever take part in a peacekeeping mission. The all-female contingent is an important experiment for the UN - to rectify the skewed gender ratio within the UN system itself where only 6% of peacekeepers are women, and more importantly, to bring a gendered perspective to conflict resolution and peacemaking. But for Ruby, Tejinder and Philomena the journey away from their families has been difficult. It is their first time in another country - they have never been so far away from home. A magnet for the hopes of the rich and poor. But with thousands of migrants pouring in every day, half of its almost 20 million inhabitants is forced to live in slums, between the cracks of the official city. The biggest of these slums is called Dharavi. With an estimated 800,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Once Dharavi was outside the city limits. Nowadays it's at the heart of a constantly growing metropolis, flanked by traffic arteries and right next door to Mumbai's new financial hub. The former marsh has turned into prime real estate - a playground for ambitious urban planning. Shezad, a Pakistani in his early 20s, lives in a small hotel run by the shady Herder. The hotel is a virtual United Nations. Shezad tries to help an older friend, Rashid, with his amnesty claim. When it fails, Herder offers to smuggle Rashid into the US for a large fee. Herder also gets Shezad a job in the kitchen of a Chinese restaurant, where he befriends Xiao, a waiter. Xiao wants to open his own restaurant; they save enough to do so, mostly through Shezad's boldness. Because Shezad is the better cook, they serve Pakistani food.
