Great lesson in taking the bull by the horns and reinventing oneself. Brad Pitt was already a successful movie star when he launched his production company Plan B (wisely named.)
He had a plan for sure, a backup in case his acting career sputtered, or if he aged out of the Hollywood system. He realized he could control projects he wished to make and be involved with.
The massive success of Plan B (12 Years a Slave, Moonlight and Selma, with both 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards) attest to the focus on quality projects, building a strong team, investing in creative works that deserve attention.
There is much to be said for driving one's own vehicle. Some prefer other routes. In today's entertainment industry, as in all business, it's the founders and people taking charge of their destiny whom are making the biggest moves, imho.
Good luck in filmmaking!
