Gabriella Garbero is a writer and editor living in St. Louis who has an artistic focus in disability and the cultural issues surrounding it. She received a B.A. from the University of Missouri - Columbia in 2013 with a major in Film Studies, along with a Multicultural Certificate. While in college, she became well known on campus for being the first disabled woman to fully participate in Pan-Hellenic sorority recruitment. In addition, she took any opportunity she could to help advocate for people with disabilities both on and off campus.
It was in her senior year of college that her interests in advocacy and filmmaking began to intersect. Outside of classes, she began to study how disability is portrayed in American media and how this controls cultural perceptions. Ultimately, she would like to start a company that produces films with disability as a focus, educates people, and sends out consultants to work on outside projects. Currently, she is working on a documentary about how Medicaid funding affects the lives of people with disabilities in America. She can be reached at Gabriella.Garbero@.
