What's up, Creative Army!

Last Wednesday, I sat down for a couple of hours with our Writers' Room members and answered everything they threw at me.

I told you before the event that I had spent this year in the meetings, on the road, and on the phone with executives, producers, financiers, and buyers, and that I wanted to hand as much of that over to you as I possibly could. That is what we did. Amanda Toney moderated, our members brought their questions, and we went straight at the stuff that actually matters to your career right now.

If you missed it, here is the good news. The full session is now available on-demand inside the Stage 32 Writers' Room, and you can watch the whole thing.

What We Got Into

This one covered a lot of ground, because our members came ready. Here is some of what we tackled:

On where the industry is right now:

  • Productions leaving Los Angeles, and what that shift means for you no matter where you live
  • Film incentives, and how to think about them strategically instead of just chasing them
  • Verticals, and where that market is actually heading
  • Streaming services and where the opportunities are hiding
  • The spec script market, honestly assessed
  • Micro budgets and what is realistically achievable at that level right now

On the work itself:

  • Story outlines and how to use them
  • Writing characters people want to spend time with
  • The use of AI in writing scripts, which is the conversation nobody can avoid this year
  • Proof of concept, and when it is worth your time and money

On the business side:

  • Pitching, and what is landing in rooms right now
  • Packaging your film
  • Crowdfunding, and how it fits alongside everything else you should be building
  • Submitting to Open Writing Assignments and how to give yourself the best shot
  • How to leverage your Double Recommend

And on the part most creatives underestimate:

  • Building long-term relationships with industry professionals, which is the thing I will keep saying until every one of you is doing it
  • Finding your support system inside this community

Why I Want You to Watch This One

I have said for years that the creatives who move fastest in this industry are the ones who understand the business they are working inside of. Talent gets you in the door. Understanding how this thing actually operates is what determines everything that happens after.

That is what this session was built to give you. Not theory, not encouragement without substance, but the current state of the marketplace as I am seeing it from where I sit, and honest answers to the questions our members are wrestling with right now.

If you have been guessing at any of this, spend a couple of hours with us.
